Lesson Plan/Activity
Line Follower Ages: 8-14
Lesson Objective: To learn to program using light sensors.
Materials Needed: NXT kits, Tape that contrast the color of the floor, computers running MINDSTORMS NXTg Software.
Procedure:
1. Have the students build their cars. Be sure that the light sensor is pointed at the ground in front of the car, that the vehicle can turn easily (possibly by using a skid plate rather than a wheel in the front).
2. Have students program their cars to follow the line using the light sensor. The program should be contained within a loop so that it will repeat the following sequence for the entire line: One motor should turn until it reads the color of the floor. This motor should stop and the other motor should turn until it reads the color of the line and then stop. This sequence will repeat to follow the line.
The original activity document and photo of the program are attached.
