My IR tower and RCX are not communicating. What should I do?
Here is a list of things to try if you are having problems downloading to your RCX.
  • Try to block the ambient light that might disrupt the IR transmitter beam: close the window coverings, turn off all the overhead lights, and/or cover the RCX and transmitter tower with a dark cloth or a box.
  • Insert fresh batteries into the RCX. To avoid losing firmware, replace one battery at a time rather than removing all six batteries and then inserting six new ones.
  • Power the RCX with an AC adapter plugged in to wall-unit electricity.
  • Try a different USB port and/or transmitter.
  • Restart the computer and re-open ROBOLAB.
  • If you are using rechargeable batteries, make sure your batteries are appropriate by reading the Knowledgebase question "Can I use rechargeable batteries in my RCX?"
  • Try this battery contact test: take off the RCX bottom and gently shake the RCX.  If any of the batteries fall out, the batteries are not the correct size, and you need to purchase a different brand of batteries.
  • Ensure the IR transmitter green LED light is lit.
  • Set the transmitter on Short Range.
  • Check the port setting and the cable connections to computer and transmitter.
  • Ensure that the RCX communication cones appear on the RCX display screen.
  • Ensure that the RCX is on, pointed toward the IR transmitter, and within 4 inches (10 cm) of the transmitter.
