Why can't I load the new ROBOLAB 2.9 firmware onto my RCX?

The ROBOLAB 2.9 firmware for the RCX is larger than the ROBOLAB 2.5.4 firmware, so it may take a greater number of attempts to load the 2.9 firmware onto the RCX. When you are downloading 2.9 firmware, try to block any ambient light that might disrupt the IR transmitter beam by turning off any overhead lights and/or covering the RCX and transmitter tower with a dark cloth or a box (make sure they are in the same box, though, so that the IR transmitter and RCX can still communicate).

One of the most reliable ways to download firmware onto your RCX is to power the RCX with an AC adapter plugged in to wall-unit electricity and to have the overhead lights turned off.

Additional troubleshooting tips for downloading firmware include:

- If you must use batteries instead of an AC adapter, make sure the RCX has fresh batteries.

- Try using a different USB port and/or IR transmitter tower.
- Restart the computer and re-open ROBOLAB.
- Before starting the firmware download process, take all the batteries out for at least two minutes to allow the RCX to reset completely.
- If you are using rechargeable batteries, use an AC adapter or fresh alkaline batteries instead. (Downloading firmware often requires more charge than rechargeable batteries can hold; you can use rechargeables again for regular operation of the RCX once the firmware has been downloaded.) See the Knowledgebase question "Can I use rechargeable batteries in my RCX?" for more information.
- Try this battery contact test: take off the RCX bottom and gently shake the RCX. If any of the batteries fall out, the batteries are not the correct size, and you need to purchase a different brand of batteries that will pass this test. Otherwise, the batteries will not make good contact with the conductive plates and will not be able to efficiently power the RCX.
