Do I need to set special classroom rules for LEGO engineering time?

It depends on you, your students, and your current classroom management scheme. You may need to make some adjustments to your classroom culture, and that may or may not require additional rules or guidelines.

One of the most important classroom management ideas is that, during LEGO engineering time, LEGO pieces are science equipment, not toys.

Based on this idea, the book Brick Layers: Creative Engineering with LEGO Constructions by the AIMS Education Foundation suggests some classroom guidelines for LEGO engineering. You may want to give them a try or adapt them to suit your classroom.

Possible LEGO Engineering Work Guidelines:
  1. LEGO engineering is different than playing with LEGO materials at home.
  2. No element leaves the kit that is not part of the assigned model or design challenge prototype.
  3. Any element out of the kit must be on the model or in a contained area.
  4. No loose elements are allowed on the desktop.
  5. During clean-up, always check the floor around your area for loose pieces.
