How does my RCX connect to my transmitter?

The RCX communicates to the tower through infrared (IR) technology. There are no wires used to connect the RCX to the tower. However, there must be an uninterrupted field of vision to the "eye" located on the front of the RCX unit. You can tell when the RCX is communicating when you see a green LED light up on the tower.

Two ranges of transmission are available and can be selected with the Short/Long Infrared setting. The serial IR Transmitter has a switch located on the unit. The USB transmitter's options are set via software, in the control panel (or equivalent)  under "LEGO USB."

Short Range: approximately 1.5 feet (0.5 meters) - ideal for general purpose work.

Long Range: approximately 8 feet (2.5 meters) - used in "direct control" or long range testing.

Note: Battery life is lower at the Long Range setting.
